Barking is one of London's very colourful areas. It combines modern architecture with houses dating back to the 1950s and 1960s. During the last century Barking significantly grew in population and even more in acreage. However, its residents' density is rather low which contributes to turning Barking into a trades district. It is also the place of origin for Short Blue Fleet - the biggest fishing fleet in Great Britain, dating back to the 18th century. During the 19th century, it expanded even more and stayed for months in open sea. When necessary, the boats of the fleet were even used by the Royal Navy in war times. However, until the beginning of the 20th century its fishing fame fainted because of the appearance and use of new means of transportation, such as the train, and a natural disaster that caused many fishermen's death or relocation. Nowadays, only the names of streets and pubs remind of its historical fishing fame.
